Water Reed Holland,
being a "wet" country, water reed is growing everywhere. It is almost
exclusively for thatching . Next to water reed we have only a limited
amount of reed-mace, which are often used as first row on the bottom
eaves.
Sedge, long straw and combed wheat reed is not used in Holland. In Latin : Phramites australisis a species from the family of grass. Water reed is an abundant plant occuring in wet places throughout the temperate parts of the world and whose aerial shoots form reeds. Reedbeds should be mown each year to prevent its becoming landlocked. Reed to be used for thatching needs to be rooted in fresh water, in an average climate. In Holland good thatch can be found in the nothern and eastern parts of the country mainly. About half of the
applied thatch is imported from
one field, two different qualities of reed
Left picture:a promising quality, right picture : nothing good will come from this lot. For the supply of good reed, much depends on the craftsmanship of your thatcher. Apart from thatching reed is used to keep in place drift sand along the coast, covering sewerage and to produce garden material like fencing for example. Thatch weighs 300 to 450 kg per square meter. One square meter thatched roof that is 30 cms thick has a weight of 40 kg. ( the underconstruction not included.) De warmtegeleidingscoëfficient van riet is 0,11 (W/mK). Het diffusieweerstandsgetal van riet is 3.
